Kintsugi is a risograph picturebook printed in zine format, and it is an expansion on the popular english expression “[like a] bull in a china shop”. Unlike its portuguese equivalent (“elephant in a china shop”), the usage of the bull in the english variant evokes a crime of anger, agression and passion.
This interpretation delves into the reasons why a bull would destroy a china shop: it explores the cycle of abuse, wrath, revenge and destruction. Beyond its first reading as an anti-bullfighting story lies a powerful metaphor for how we deal with and recover from difficult relationships.
Two different techniques (and colors) were chosen to better represent this clash of energies: blue watercolor for the serene, delicate porcelaine, and red pencils for the restless, tempestuous bull.
