Traje Vianense

ORNAMENTAL COMIC
Alcohol markers & colored pencils on 180gm A3 paper

TRAJE VIANENSE is a hand-drawn comic depicting the craft, from start to finish, of traditional women’s outfits from Viana do Castelo: Traje à Vianesa.
It highlights the process women undertook over 100 years ago in order to create their own costumes: from tending to the sheep, gathering linen from the fields, spinning yarn, to embroidering their own designs.

The different panels of the story are interwoven with ornamental gutters and decorative margins, featuring motifs from a 100 year old heirloom costume (seen below). In the lower center circle, a queer twist is revealed: the women from each symmetrical half of the comic are drawn to each other after dancing.
This comic has been printed in small, exclusive editions in Sweden: in 4 color, A3 risoprint edition; and sublimated textile pieces of varying sizes.
